Mac and HP LaserJet 1018

LaserJet 1018 is not properly supported on Mac out of the box. There is a way to make it work however
Make sure it's turned on and plug it into your Mac. Open printing preferences. Add new printer - HP LaserJet 1018. It will ask you to select driver: search for HP LaserJet 1015 and add this printer. Now this will not work, yet.

Open System Update and search for updates. It will find update for HP printing software, install it.
Open printing preferences again. Delete the printer you just added. Now add it again. This time tell it to use printer driver HP LaserJet 1022. It will work without a problem, even it's picture is familiar.
Thank you HP for the hassle. It's your fault, not Apple's, that you make windows-only printers.

Update (25/10/2011): If you are missing the drivers install them from Apple site. Search Google for "mac hp printer drivers" if the link provided is outdated.

thank you for the effort.
Zero for result.
sorry it didn't work with me.
do you have another solution

Hi ABOHASHIM,

After you chose the 1022 driver try and run the Software Update again, install the suggested HP driver; delete again the printer and re add it. Now select the "HP LaserJet 1022, 1.2.0.224" driver; it will work! (I run Snow Leopard).

Bragi, I don't know how to thank you for your elegant solution! I was stuck for the last 2 years with this printer trying to make it work with the foo2zjs driver from foomatic. Not only that it didn't work properly, but it was extremely complicated procedure. I actually gave up on this printer and was about to buy a new one. Then I gave it a last chance and search google for a solution; I have reached your post, and followed it quite skeptically (people tried for years to make it years and all failed). It now works like a charm and I thank you for that!

Sweet - the instructions given in the 5:24am comment works for me on Snow Leopard.

Note that on Snow Leopard, "System Update" is Apple -> "Software Update".

lovely this worked like a charm, i got to say you saved my life, and the money for a new printer. I wonder how did you find out this method.

All these directions worked perfectly up till the last one - the only HP LaserJet 1022 driver which came up was a Gutenprint v5.2.3, rather than the HP LaserJet 1022, 1.2.0.224 which you recommended. Have HP changed their update (as I have only done this today, 5 July 2010)? If you have any further advice it would be much appreciated.

It worked!
Just bought a new Mac Mini and just knew there had to be a way.

Thank you

It works. As noted above you have to update the 1015 driver, then uninstall, load the old 1022 driver, update, and uninstall and finally install using the 1.3.0.261 (latest) driver. Works like a charm.

Thank you for the awesome tip!!!

Thank u so much the driver worked very well.

For those who can see only the Gutenprint driver try to download the HP Drivers update pack from the Apple's site directly.
Then the 1.3.0.261 driver will be available for you.

It works on mac osx 10.6.4 :)
But is there a way to activate the two-sided option?

Than you for the solution!!

Anonymous said...

Perfect!! all works now!

Thank's a lot for you support!

Anonymous said...

I'm on snow leopard and was able to see 1.3.0.261 driver only after I removed 1022 printer and reinstalled it. Thanks a million!!
I was struggling with linux ports hack all this time. I did get the ports hack working but I had to upload the firmware every time I rebooted the printer :-(
Your 'hack' is simply elegant.
Next step: share this printer from my mac and see if other linux and win7 machines can print to it.

This is really great! I was struggling with the foo2zjs driver. Worked for me on Tiger and Leopard but ever since Snow Leopard it didn't work anymore.

This trick did it for me! Thanks.

Billion thanks for this great great solution!!! It took 5 mins and now 1018 is up and running again!!! I really do not understand why HP couldn't offer a driver for Mac in the first place...

For future reference the HP Laserjet 1022 Gutenprint v5.2.3 was the only option to use and it still worked like a charm!

I just bought a Mac 1 week ago, to discover that HP didn't provide a Driver for this Printer for the Mac (like what?!?!)
So, Thank-you, thank-you, for saving me time, trouble and some money!!

HP Printer Drivers

Alanlr said...

I just did it with my new MacBook Air. For some reason MBA had a very short list of available printers, so I first had to go to Apple support and download a full compliment of drivers for Snow Leopard. Then, I followed your 1015/1022/updated 1022 procedure including the updates, and it worked. Thank you so much for the precise instructions.

I spent an hour on phone support with HP, and they made sure to tell me several times that it is Apples fault that there is not a OSX 10.4 driver for the CP1025nw. I wonder if the tricks on this page would work for my situation?

Nice Post - I hope you get the most out of this combination of products! I have found there's a tool called "Driver Finder" which seems to work very well. We've created this Driver Finder Review to fix the problem on yuor PC

I fairly new to Mac but am very computer literate. Iv put my hp laserjet 1018, gone to system pref, printers, deleted any printer, add laserjet 1018 but does not ask me to select a driver. A do however have tried - Options & Supplies, Driver, Print using and selected HP Laserjet 1015 - Gutenprintv5.2.3. Have done software updates before and after doing this and nothing is found to update. Should I download the HP Drivers update pack or what else do you recommend? Kevy G

Works on Lion, with my macbook. Had to download the 493mb HP complete driver from apple's website as mentioned above, since there was no listing for the 1022 (except for 'gutenburg' which doesn't work).

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907

Thank you, like most everyone else, I bought this a couple years ago, got it working using the foomatic thing, until upgrading to leopard. And, yes, you can share the printer as a generic postscript printer to others on your local network.

Cheers, Jeff

How do you get this to work work with lion? Thanks!
